Hey, buddy! The roundabout only runs in one direction

Roundabouts are popping up on roadways all around the American Midwest. What could go wrong, right?

Here in the US, roundabouts run counter-clockwise. That’s just how it is.

Except I actually just encountered a guy, who was backing up within a roundabout. Apparently, he missed his turnoff. So he threw his vehicle into reverse to try his exit again.

 Yikes!

Fortunately, there were only 4 cars in play at the time, and we all saw what this rocket scientist was up to. We all hit the brakes and watched. Pretty sure there was some serious head-shaking around the roundabout. We’ve probably all been around the block a few times, so to speak.

I wanted to shout, “Hey, just go around the circle again!”

 Go figure.

Sizing up Baby's 1st Christmas

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and this Grammy got an early start. I hit the stores even before Black Friday hit us. (And I skipped the crowds that day!)

Like any enthusiastic grandparent with an adorable grandbaby, I was immediately drawn to a display of “My 1st Christmas” pajamas and other festive outfits. I began clicking through the tiny plastic hangers, looking for just the right size.

 What a disappointment.

To my dismay, all they had were the 24-month size – in their entire collection of “My 1st Christmas” apparel.

That struck me as funny. Just how big are those babies?

Ohio kid channels Toy Story pals, clawing into claw machine

Somebody better call Buzz and Woody, stat.

A little boy apparently crawled through the prize door of an arcade-style claw machine in Mason, Ohio, right after lunchtime on July 7. His adventure was captured by surveillance footage and subsequently posted online.

Not sure where his accompanying adult/s were at this point.

The claw machine was situated in a hallway, but pushed into a nearby store after a man in a volunteer tee shirt spotted the lad’s legs sticking out of the prize chute.

Police and EMS personnel were called to the scene and rescued the boy by dismantling the back of the claw machine.

The incident, reported by ABC Chicago, Scripps News, UPI, and other news outlets, occurred at the Mason Community Center in Warren County, about 22 miles north of Cincinnati.

At least he got to keep the stuffed animal toy, which he handed to his mother after coming out of the machine.

Guess that’s one way to claw your way to the top.

Toppling cereal box dominoes to solve hunger? That’s grea-a-at!

What does a domino lineup of nearly 13,000 cereal boxes have to do with fighting hunger and smashing a Guinness World Record?

Move for Hunger, a non-profit philanthropic based in New Jersey, received truckloads of boxed dry cereal, donated by Kellogg’s and Kroger. The collection included a variety of Kellogg’s cereals. Hellman’s and the Lineage Foundation for Good added sponsorship assistance.

Plus, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan offered to kick in a gallon of milk for every cereal box donated for the project.

The cereal boxes were assembled in a domino-like lineup in the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center. Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger toppled the first box, and the rest simply followed in progression.

Video footage of the event was posted on the Move For Hunger Facebook page.

As it turned out, the record-breaking lineup included 12,952 cereal boxes, smashing the previous record of 6,391 and providing close to half a million meals to folks in need via food banks in local Michigan communities.

I think I got the POINT from this license plate

Is that a vanity license plate, or are you just happy to see me?

Honestly, you can’t make this stuff up.

Here it is, Monday morning, and I’m off to the local hospital for a medical scan. The doctor’s order calls for IV contrast.

So, no big deal. I’ve had that a couple dozen times before.

I pull into the parking lot, and a grey minivan cuts right in front of me. Just then, I happened to notice the license plate:

### JAB

The first three were numbers, but it’s probably illegal (or at least unwise) for me to post the whole license number.

The plate was from another state, which I won’t name, except to say that it rhymes with “will annoy” (Sorry, had to. It’s a border thing.) And I hate to poke fun, but the plate may or may not have been stamped by a former Governor.

 Maybe that’s beside the point.

I just had to wonder whether the minivan belonged to the phlebotomist, nurse, or medical student who would be administering my intravenous hookup.

As it turned out, the one doing the needlework was most likely a first-timer or a trainee, based on the number of jabs she took to set things up in my arm. (I tried hard to be brave and stoic, as much as it hurt.) Let's just say she's likely to become sharper at it with practice.

On the bright side, I’m kind of glad it’s a chillier day, so I won’t have to roll my sleeves up for my afternoon conference. The folks I’m meeting could jump to all sorts of conclusions, based on the needle tracks I’m now sporting. But I’m leery of taking a stab at any of that.

This medical scheduler almost got more than she asked for

Honestly, I didn’t mean to start anything. I was just answering her long litany of personal questions – in an all-too public setting. Does this stuff only happen to me?

Standing in front of just one of several Plexiglas-fronted cubicles, I tried to respond as briefly and accurately as possible, as the medical scheduler seated on the other side of the transparent shield filled out the required paperwork to set up yet another exploratory test for me.

Reaching the end of her list of queries, she looked up at me and asked, “Do you have any problems?”

I paused, just for a moment. Then I replied, “Oh, honey. Where do I start?”

She gave me a blank stare.

Then she rephrased the question. “Do you have any problems related to this particular procedure?”

Maybe she should have led with that.

I grinned at her. “I bet you get that all the time,” I said.

 “Nope,” she answered.

We wrapped up the details without many more words. That’s probably not a bad thing.
