Entropy

What does entropy have to do with human socialization?

Entropy may be largely known as a scientific term, referring to physical thermodynamic properties. However, the word may be used in a social context as well.

Essentially, entropy points to a process of degradation, by which unlike things become uniform. Entropy generally leads to inertness, and a random sort of disorder that results in a lack of individuality.

What is social entropy?

If you've ever encountered a tightly knit group of women (or men, for that matter), you may have seen this process in action.

It starts with the congregating of several unique and possibly diverse individuals, who ultimately end up looking very much alike.

Progressively, they may begin to dress alike, talk alike, and even act alike.
  • They pick up one another's vocal inflections, figures of speech, and personal mannerisms.
  • They develop common interests.
  • They build shared experiences and memories.
  • They shop in the same stores and wear the same brand names.
  • They style their hair the same way.
  • They watch the same TV shows and see the same movies.
  • They read the same books.
  • They support the same political / special-interest causes.
  • They listen to the same music.
  • They tell the same jokes.
  • They eat the same foods.
  • They like (and dislike) the same people.
  • They fill the same gossip grapevines.
In time, it may be difficult to tell them apart.

Uh-huh. That's entropy.

And, with exclusive enclaves, it may be inevitable.

  1. Interesting. I am more familiar with the scientific (material) form of entropy which causes all things to disintegrate into simpler forms. This social entropy must be just more of the same; all of which began with sin and the fall of man. It all causes creation to grown under its weight.

  2. This is a very interesting concept. I was always a loner, and have a problem with authority. But even I probably fell into this for a couple of years in high school, even though it was only with one or two friends. :)
