J is for “Jungle Gym”
- Oxymorons from A to Z
Picture the scene: Wild animals scamper high and low,
whooping and shrieking and knocking one another to the ground.
Welcome to the jungle gym, a piece of playground equipment,
provided for the recreation of energetic youngsters.
OK, maybe some elementary school teachers would beg to
differ. They might even say we're oxymoronic for raising the issue.
What’s an oxymoron?
Basically, an oxymoron is a
phrase that seems contradictory or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do
not make sense. Often, oxymorons find their way into popular usage, becoming
cultural catchwords or frequently used idioms.
Many of these curious wordings
strike us as delightfully amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is
“oxymoron”?
