N is for "No Comment” - Oxymorons
from A to Z
News fans: You had to know this was coming.
People like to think “no comment” is something akin to “nothing
much.” Both are oxymorons. But “no comment” speaks volumes to seasoned journalists. Any reporter worth his or her salt knows there’s always more to
the story.
What’s an oxymoron?
Basically, an oxymoron is a
phrase that seems contradictory or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do
not make sense. Often, oxymorons find their way into popular usage, becoming
cultural catchwords or frequently used idioms.
Many of these curious wordings
strike us as delightfully amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is
“oxymoron”?
