A is for “Act
Naturally” - Oxymorons from A to Z
This oxymoronic phrase sounds like a miscue. If you’re
acting, how can it be natural? Of course, that’s the point.
Think of a thespian, trotting out memorized lines onstage. Or
consider a criminal, trying to avert suspicion. You got it. Deliberate deception.
Just act naturally.
What’s an
oxymoron?
Basically, an oxymoron is a phrase that seems contradictory
or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do not make sense. Often, oxymorons
find their way into popular usage, becoming cultural catchwords or frequently
used idioms.
Many of these curious wordings strike us as delightfully
amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is “oxymoron”?
