Hello? Halo? OK, we get it.
This vintage Valentine illustrates the classic stereotype of
male/female relationships, in which the guy is seen as devilish, and the girl
is simply angelic.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And blah-blah-blah.
Maybe you beg to differ. Who wants to play The Devil's Advocate
over this one?
It’s cliché to a tee, rubs our feathers the wrong way, and
doesn’t fit the bill at all.
We’ve all seen the hackneyed image of the undecided
individual, sorting out whisperings from an angel on one shoulder and a devil
on the other. Perhaps this Valentine evokes the same level of irritation.
Sure, this little Valentine may be meant as childish fun.
Remember what Father Brown Stories author G.K. Chesterton said about angels? “The
reason angels can fly is because they take themselves lightly.”
I love that. But I still don’t like this Valentine.
