U is for “Uncontested Divorce” - Oxymorons from A to Z

Controversial divorces are the stuff of tabloid headlines and TV movies. We see the ugliest side of marital breakups all the time. Is it really possible for a couple to dissolve their marriage without a fight?

In the courtroom, this may occasionally happen. Judges and lawyers call such a case an uncontested divorce. Often, these never even make it to the courtroom, because the affairs are settled in a simpler manner.

What is an uncontested divorce?

Legally, an uncontested divorce is a marital split with no dispute over property division, debt responsibilities, and the care and support of children from the marriage.

OK, we get that. But is any divorce actually uncontested?

Let’s think about this one a moment. 

Maybe both parties agree to end their marriage. They might even be agreeable about how to divvy up everything they own. They may come to a meeting of the minds on how to raise their kids cooperatively. But is the breakup really unanimous, unquestioned, friendly, and without regrets?

Is a peaceful parting of the ways even possible? Or is somebody still trying to keep the peace, even when things have fallen to piecees?

If they really got along, then why is the marriage on the rocks? (Well, you know. It begs the question sometimes.)

The jury’s still out on this one.

What’s an oxymoron?

Basically, an oxymoron is a phrase that seems contradictory or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do not make sense. Often, oxymorons find their way into popular usage, becoming cultural catchwords or frequently used idioms.

Many of these curious wordings strike us as delightfully amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is “oxymoron”?
