B is for “Bittersweet” - Oxymorons from A to Z

B is for “Bittersweet” - Oxymorons from A to Z

Both cannot be true … or can they? What does it mean when we call something bittersweet?

If we’re talking about bittersweet chocolate, we need to add sugar to make it palatable. If we’re recounting bittersweet memories, we may smile through tears.

And if we are describing a person, you’d best beware. Such an individual might not be as kind as  he or she appears.

Bittersweet is oxymoronic, as it speaks to two extremes of flavor or feeling, leaving us conflicted.

What’s an oxymoron?

Basically, an oxymoron is a phrase that seems contradictory or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do not make sense. Often, oxymorons find their way into popular usage, becoming cultural catchwords or frequently used idioms.

Many of these curious wordings strike us as delightfully amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is “oxymoron”?

  1. What great idea for topics - Oxymorons.
So true about bittersweet. This had my interest from the first line to the last. All those things we know, but never really think about in detail. Thanks for the read, hope to return during the A to Z Challenge.
