T is for “Thinking Out Loud” - Oxymorons from A to Z

Stop me, if you’ve heard this one. No, wait. I was just thinking out loud.

Sure, you’ve heard it before. You’ve listened and maybe nodded, while someone bent your ear in a conversation with himself. (You didn’t really think he wanted an answer, right?)

You’ve also spotted solo drivers, chatting to themselves at stoplights. You’ve sauntered past shoppers, muttering ingredient lists to no one else.

And you’ve even wondered if that guy with the Bluetooth headset really had anyone else on the line. Maybe he was having a dialogue all alone.

This is musing aloud, audible reflection, vocal pondering, and cogitation with explanation. And we’ve all done it.

No, we're not hearing voices, and we don't all have imaginary friends ... or giant unseen rabbits ... or zombie alter-egos.

Maybe thinking out loud is not all bad.

We’ve all know folks who set their mouths in gear before their brains were on the job. At least those who are thinking out loud have both engines running.

What’s an oxymoron?

Basically, an oxymoron is a phrase that seems contradictory or incongruous. Taken literally, the words do not make sense. Often, oxymorons find their way into popular usage, becoming cultural catchwords or frequently used idioms.

Many of these curious wordings strike us as delightfully amiss. Besides, what sort of whimsical word is “oxymoron”?
